Talk: Generic Rigidity and the Grassmannian Abstract

Join SUM at a talk given by one of Lawrence's math professors, Alex Heaton! Prof. Heaton will give a talk on generic rigidity and the Grassmannian.

Abstract: We place the vertices of a graph into space and treat the edges as rigid bars allowed to rotate about joints at each vertex. People have studied the resulting objects for a long time, going back to Maxwell, Cauchy, Mobius, and others. For example, Maxwell stated that a graph must have at least 3|V| - 6 edges to have a chance at being rigid in space. In this talk I will show how to decide if the graph is rigid or flexible using combinatorial objects called Young Tableaux, which appear frequently in representation theory and geometry.
