Long Confinement of Electron Plasmas in a Dipole Magnetic Field

Abstract:

Long confinement of non-neutral plasmas in cylindrical, uniform magnetic fields has been achieved and studied extensively. Recent theory and computation identify analogous, stable confinement states in magnetic dipole geometries. The Lawrence Non-neutral Dipole (LND) is an experimental device designed to access these states with a supported magnet. Measurements using copper wall probes provide insight into the diocotron mode behavior of the electron plasma. A novel induced charge diagnostic indicates confinement times of over 300 seconds. Please join me as I guide you through the results from various experiments I conducted using the LND over the recent years.
