Spoerl Lecture Series -Menominee Cultural Preservation: True Tales from a South Branch Scholar

Guest: Miranda Washinawatok
Situated in the ancestral homelands of the Menominee Nation, this talk offers personal reflections on cultural preservation, archaeology, and environmental justice from the perspective of a South Branch scholar. Speaking from the heart, Miranda shares “true tales” shaped by family teachings, community knowledge holders, and the universal Indigenous values that have guided her academic journey – respect for all life, the understanding that all beings are related, and the responsibility to care for land, water, animal relatives, and people.
Central to this talk is a reminder that every person carries responsibility for the Earth. Through stories rooted in lived experience, Miranda invites audiences to begin with local, daily acts of care and to recognize that cultural preservation and environmental stewardship are shared human obligations.
