Studying Plasmas in the Lab: How We Do It and What It Uncovers

Abstract:
Plasmas are hot, ionized gases often composed of ≫ 10 5 particles per cm−3 which exhibit collective behavior. Given the large number of particles involved in plasmas’ dynamics, studying them is a challenge which can be tackled in a number of ways. This talk gives an overview of what these methods are on a theoretical level and shows the experimental implementation of one such method in a lab setting.
To provide a concrete example of experimental plasma physics, we consider a recent study of magnetic reconnection and show how such studies can uncover intricate plasma dynamics.
