 "The global use of plastics is continually increasing, 
 with similar increasing trends of total plastic 
 waste generation and of plastic pollution to the 
 environment. The accumulation of plastic pollution 
 in the environment is a topical concern often 
 focused on in environmental advocacy, while the 
 impacts of microplastic pollution have received 
 more recent attention. Lakes and oceans collect 
 plastic pollution while dynamic processes transport 
 plastics throughout the aquatic environment. Plastics 
 often end up on beaches where they are more readily 
 broken down by breaking waves and UV radiation, 
 possibly returning to the water or becoming buried 
 in the sand. These processes are driven by the 
 complex beach flows from breaking waves. To fully 
 understand the fate of aquatic plastic pollution, 
 we explore the accumulation of plastic debris 
 on beaches through fieldwork in the Great Lakes, 
 experiments in laboratory wave tanks, and computational 
 modeling."\n\n
