SUMMARY:From Ancient Art to Modern Biology: The Power
 of X-ray Analysis

 Matthew Stoneking\, matthew.r.stoneking@lawrence.edu
DESCRIPTION:
 Physics Colloquium \n
Speaker: Professor Margaret Koker, Lawrence University\n
 \n
In my talk, I will explore how x-ray measurement
and analysis tools, utilizing material science
and physics, can be applied to art history and
biology. We will delve into the physics behind
 these (relatively) nondestructive measurement
techniques and discuss their benefits. This work
will highlight a beautiful intersection of art
 and science.\n
 \n
I will share interesting data collected from a
variety of x-ray methods, including x-ray fluorescence (XRF)
and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Furthermore I will
explore the preliminary results and future measurement
possibilities for plants, fungus, and cultural
heritage specimens measured during my research
sabbatical at Cornell's High Energy Synchrotron
Source (CHESS). This work contributed to an early
step toward efforts to create a new experimental
end station where high resolution data can be
 collected for life science specimens.\n\n
