Welcome Alumni!

It's Reunion Weekend and the Library invites alumni to visit the Mudd. We're open Friday the 20th, 8am to 4pm and Saturday the 21st, noon to 4pm.

While you're here (and even while you're not), you can search the library catalog for books by alumni authors or visit the Lawrence Archives Digital Collections to view photos and documents that document Lawrence's past.

Stop by and say hello. We look forward to seeing you again.

Marian the Librarian

marianWho is more multi-faceted than singer/actress Shirley Jones? She went from Academy Award-winner, playing a prostitute in Elmer Gantry, to the most wholesome of TV mothers on The Partridge Family. In between she portrayed Rodgers and Hammerstein heroines, solidified every stereotype of librarians in The Music Man and married both the suave Jack Cassidy and the goofy Marty Ingles. Had she stayed in Western Pennsylvania where she was born 74 years ago today, she might have ended up working in the family business, the Jones Brewery.
We've got her on video in Carousel, The Music Man and Oklahoma!

TV For Old People

kangarooReturn with us again to the 1950's and a most momentous day: on this day in 1955 both Captain Kangaroo AND The Mickey Mouse Club premiered on TV, the first on CBS, the second on ABC. This must have presented quite a problem for children with no DVR or TiVo®.

Those of you of a certain age will certainly remember:
Monday - Fun With Music Day
Tuesday - Guest Star Day
Wednesday - Anything Can Happen Day
Thursday - Circus Day
Friday - Talent Round-Up Day

And we must revisit SCTV for "Captain Combat"

Also premiering on Oct. 3:
"Father Knows Best" (1954, CBS)
"The Andy Griffith Show" (1960, CBS)
"The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961, CBS)

Lady Day and Trane

gardeniaOn July 18, 1959, the New York Times announced the death of Billie Holiday. On the same day 8 years later the paper would print John Coltrane's obituary.
The Mudd has lots of recordings of performances and compositions by Billie Holiday and John Coltrane.

On a happier note, on this day in 1953 Elvis Presley recorded two songs ("My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin") for $4 at Sun Records in Memphis. You can hear the beginning of "My Happiness" on the Sun Studio audio tour

ARTstor and the University of Michigan collaborate to digitize the Asian Art Photographic Distribution

In May 2005, ARTstor and the University of Michigan announced a partnership through which they would make available digital versions of many of the images previously distributed by the University of Michigan's non-profit slide distribution service. The collaboration focused initially on the ACSAA Color Slide Project, which was digitized in partnership with the American Council for Southern Asian Art. ARTstor recently announced the completion of this project and the inclusion of more than 12,000 ACSAA Color Slide Project images in the ARTstor Digital Library. These images have significantly enriched ARTstor's holdings in the South Asian art, complementing the related materials from the Huntington Archive of Asian Art.

ARTstor and the University of Michigan are now collaborating to digitize the majority of the slides from another important archive at the University of Michigan's Department of the History of Art: the archive associated with Asian Art Photographic Distribution, which focuses on the art of East Asia.
