Changes to Student Long Distance Calling Services

Dear Resicom Users,

As of Monday, June 25th, Resicom will no longer be an option for long distance calls from a campus phone. Campus phones will be reprogrammed to permit only campus, local, and 800-number calls. You will need to make alternative plans for long distance calling. For a list of viable options, please reference the following website.

To summarize, starting Monday, June 25, 2007, if you want to:
* make a campus call, simply dial the 4-digit extension;
* make a local call, dial 9 followed by the phone number;
* make a long-distance call with a calling card, dial 9 followed by the calling card number; then follow calling card's instructions.

Voicemail System Updates & Outages

ITS is making final plans for installation of a new voicemail system next week. The old system is being replaced at this time because the manufacturer will soon end support for it.

The new system will preserve the user interface of the current one (same keys to press, same basic functionality) and will allow us to eventually offer new features including a caller menu for individual lines and the ability to save multiple greetings for different times of day or other purposes.

Our conversion plan calls for migration to the new system to start at 4:00 on Monday, June 25th. As part of the conversion, the contents of existing voice mailboxes, greeting, announcements, and voicemail distribution lists will be transferred to the new system.

Scheduled Outages:

There will be a brief voicemail outage on Thursday, June 21 from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m in order for us to prepare for the conversion on Monday, June 25.

As the conversion will take several hours, voicemail will be unavailable Monday, June 25 from 4:00 p.m. until approximately 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26.

During outage times, voicemail will be unavailable. Callers will not be able to leave messages, and users will not be able to retrieve messages.

If you have any concerns, questions, or special needs related to this transition, please contact the HelpDesk at ext. 6570. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the voicemail transition.

Internet Service Upgrade

On Wednesday, June 28, 2007 Lawrence University transitioned to a new Internet Service provider. The change in service will result in a higher bandwidth Internet connection.

While most Internet traffic is working normally a small number of web sites remain unavailable.

ITS and our Internet Service provider will continue to work on the problem. Please contact the HelpDesk at helpdesk@lawrence.edu or 832-6570 if you have any questions or concerns.

Changes to Webmail Layouts

Simplex/Spid Users,

Please be advised that both the Simplex and Spid layouts, or skins, will
no longer be available in Webmail effective this Saturday, June 30. This
change is an effort to increase user efficiency and reduce ITS
maintenance related to the Simplex and Spid layouts.

Simplex will be replaced with LookOut. This improved skin offers a
two-pane layout which is similar to Thunderbird Mail and Mac Mail.
Features include spell check and drag-and-drop filing of messages. The
LookOut skin performs best on campus or on a broadband/high-speed
Internet connection.

Spid users may prefer to use Legacy. This skin offers the original
Lawrence Webmail layout. It is the best choice for dial-up or slow
Internet connections.

If you would like additional information on using these layouts, please refer to the Webmail Guide on the ITS website.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes, please
contact the HelpDesk at x6570. Thank you.

ITS Introduces Print Management to LU Students!

Information Technology Services is proud to announce the arrival of Print Management on campus - an initiative recommended by the Student Welfare Committee to reduce printed paper waste at Lawrence.

ITS believes the new printing system will help the environment as well as offer additional convenience to students. It will no longer be necessary for students to resend a document to print at another location if a printer becomes jammed or out of paper. Rather, print jobs may be retrieved from one of many Print Release Stations across campus.

What exactly is Print Management?
Print Management allows print jobs to collect in a print queue until released by the owner from a Print Release Station. Print jobs will remain in queue for 15 minutes; if jobs are not released within the allotted time frame, they will be automatically canceled. Authentication with a network password is required to release a print job. This security feature will ensure that print jobs may only be released by their owner. Print jobs may be reviewed and released from any Print Release Station on campus.

Print Management will be rolled out on Thursday, November 1. Implementation will most likely be completed by the close of Reading Period on Sunday, November 4.

For additional information including Print Release Station locations and how to utilize Print Management on a personal computer, refer to the ITS website on Print Management.

Please contact ITS if you have questions or if you encounter a problem using the Print Management system. Thank you!

Student photos in Voyager for faculty

The Technology Advisory Committee (TAC), responding to requests from faculty, has announced that student photos can now be viewed in Voyager class, waiting, advisee, and major/minor/concentration lists. With guidance from folks in the Registrar's Office, ITS development staff has made this possible.

When you pull up one of these lists, at the very bottom of the screen will be a link that says, for example, "Display class list with pictures." Click on that and, voila! You can, of course, "Display class list without pictures" if you prefer.

These are the same student ID photos that appear in Find. They won't export into Excel, but they do appear in a larger size on the individual student pages.

You will also note the student's nickname, as known to the Registrar's Office, in parentheses after their name throughout the Voyager displays. The nickname has also been added to the list exports.
